Double refraction

Jan 31, 2022

Double refraction is an optical property of a material that has a refractive index that depends on the polarization and direction of propagation of light. Birefringence is usually quantified as the maximum difference between the refractive indices exhibited by a material. Crystals with non-cubic crystal structures are generally birefringent, as are plastics under mechanical stress.
